Course Description:

Primary emphasis is on medically determined aspects of disabling impairments/disabilities. Attention will be directed to the current trends and methodologies involved in rehabilitation processes with and for persons with developmental, emotional, physical, and/or psychiatric disabilities.


Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Read and understand medical reports which use technical phrases and abbreviations specific to the medical and allied medical professions.

2. Have insight into the roles and responsibilities of various members of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team.

3. Describe the basic anatomy, physiology, and pathology of organs and systems associated with common disabling conditions.

4. Describe the etiology, treatment and prognosis of common disabling conditions.

5. Describe the functional limitations associated with the major disabling conditions, particularly as they relate to the delivery of rehabilitation services.

6. Describe the impact of each major disabling condition on the life adjustment of the individual in multicultural settings.

7. Develop knowledge of Life Care Planning issues and procedures.


Course Content:

Students will be responsible for assigned textbook and handout readings, class participation through attendance at lectures and class discussions, completion and presentation of an individual project, mid-term examination, and a final examination.

Individual Project:

Each student will arrange for and conduct an interview with an allied medical service provider, e.g., physical therapist, occupational therapist, recreation therapist, speech therapist, etc. Students are encouraged to interview non-traditional service providers. The interviewee must be pre-approved by the instructor. The results will be written up in a short report of one to two pages and presented to the class in an oral report of five to ten minutes duration. The student should concentrate on the therapist’s role and function as well as their unique contribution to the rehabilitation outcome. These papers are due at the beginning of class on week 12. Please make two copies.

Terminal Objectives:

As a result of this course the student will be able to address the reasons for, proper manner of, correct attitude toward, documentation regarding, formats to assist, tools to use, and results to be obtained through provision and coordination of effective and efficacious medical services.



Late Work Policy:

Any assignment not completed on the due date without express written permission of the professor will result in a one letter grade penalty for each class sessions that the work is delinquent.
