Study will involve an overview of etiology, progression, and treatment of major disabling conditions. The interplay of physical, psychosocial, and vocational implications is included with discussion of medical terminology and adaptive equipment. Other readings as assigned Class Objectives Students will demonstrate: a working knowledge of the use of medical terminology in rehabilitation. a general knowledge of disabling conditions and their medical treatment and/or management. an understanding of the implications of disabling conditions for training, education, and employment. 4. able to describe the psychosocial impact of disability Learning Structure: Students are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the class including discussion, group activities, and individual projects. If you are not able to attend a class or you will be late, it is your responsibility to obtain the information related to lectures or class assignments from your fellow peers. Lecture notes and/or powerpoints used in class are not provided online except as a disability accommodation. Accommodations: Please let me know if you have a disability and require accommodations. Formal registration with the Office of Disability Accommodations (ODA) is required for accommodations. Examinations: Examinations will be scheduled periodically (about every 2-3 weeks) with notice at least one week in advance. Questions will be in a variety of formats including true/false, multiple choice, and short answer. Examinations will count for 50% of the total grade. Policies related to student conductc and academic dishonesty apply to this class. Assignment 1. Personal Interview and Paper: Arrange to spend some time with an individual who has a chronic condition or disability. Interview the individual with an objective of learning about the condition, how the condition affects the person in his/her daily life including education and employment. In addition, you are expected to do some research about the condition. Discuss the etiology, treatment and/or medical intervention, and the possible implications of the condition for training, education, and work. The paper should be approximately 7-10 pages in length typed double spaced not including references. Use APA style for documentation. The paper will be graded on thoroughness, the use of appropriate resources and documentation, as well as creativity/logic of presentation. Please proof read paper prior to submission for spelling, grammar, etc. Your references should include at least 10-12 sources equally divided among internet resources and more traditional books and journals. The paper will be worth approximately 50% of the total grade.
