Description: This course is built around completion of one final project, where each student applies Psychiatric Rehabilitation within his/her internship agency. The first two assignments are updates, to be prepared using the assignment descriptions below. The final project is detailed on the following pages.

Course objectives:
• Students will be able to state the mission and philosophy of psychiatric rehabilitation.
• Students will be able to describe the psychiatric rehabilitation process.
• Students will demonstrate how to implement the psychiatric rehabilitation process.
• Students will be able to identify key implementation issues for psychiatric rehabilitation.

You will find the syllabus, information on assignments, worksheets, and other relevant information. Also, from time to time, links will be added to interesting web sites. Check your ability to access archived courseinfo sites, in case you want to use forms or handouts posted there.
Readings: No required readings; recommended readings or reference lists will be provided for the topics presented in class.

This is a four-page written assignment, with no worksheets required. Each page should be typed in single-spaced 12-point type (Times New Roman or Ariel) and use one-inch margins. You may use either a blank space between paragraphs with no initial indentation, or a ½ inch indentation at the start of each paragraph. Insert your name, the course name and assignment number, and the date into two lines in the header. If you do not know how to format your page in this way, you should ask for assistance.

Write a one-page description of psychiatric rehabilitation as you understand it, emphasizing information that you think is critical for people at your internship agency to know. For example, if your internship agency uses a predominantly treatment-oriented approach, your description of psychiatric rehabilitation might focus on principles and values. On the other hand, if your internship agency is very sophisticated in the use of psychiatric rehabilitation, you might want to emphasize the strengths that you observe in practice. Be sure to cite any reference materials that you use in preparing this description (use correct APA format), including any published material on the service model on which your program or agency is based. Any reference list(s) may be included on a separate page.

Prepare an agency assessment, evaluating the degree to which your internship agency implements psychiatric rehabilitation. Obviously, since the assessment is only one page, you will need to be brief. You may use any format that you choose. Values and principles of psychiatric rehabilitation from any source (e.g., IAPSRS, RC 606) may be used as the basis of your assessment. Be sure to include several concrete observable examples of implementation strengths and deficits. Recommended: Use information in the recommended text to help structure your description. For example, see Chapter 8 in the Drake et al. (2005) text: “Closing the gap between what services are and what they could be.”

Describe one individual who uses the services of your internship agency. The individual should be someone with whom you have interacted. You may use any format that you choose (e.g., RC706 client description), but you must limit the description to a single page. Be sure to include information relevant to the individual’s rehabilitation and recovery.

Use as much or as little of this page as you choose. Include a brief description of your progress to date on completing the final project. List any questions that you have about psychiatric rehabilitation, and/or your completion of the final project. Identify at least one personal strength and one personal weakness in your own attitudes, knowledge, and skills related to implementing psychiatric rehabilitation.
Update # 2, due on March 28, 2007
This is a two-page written assignment, with no worksheets required. Include a revised and expanded description of the same person from Update #1, or a second description of a different individual who uses services at your agency. Include another progress report that follows the instructions for Page 4 of Update #1.
Final Project, due on May 2, 2007
Note for 2007 students: Although you are only required to present for a minimum of 15 minutes, given the small class size, you have some flexibility in your timing. The final project presentation currently is scheduled for the week after the CRC exam, which you should factor into planning your presentation. Check with Pat before presenting about special requirements for formatting or presenting, in the event of audience members requiring accommodation.
This project allows you to demonstrate that you understand psychiatric rehabilitation well enough to implement it in practice. You have the option of implementing the entire psychiatric rehabilitation process with one individual, or implementing various aspects of psychiatric rehabilitation in some other way. The instructions that follow provide a general overview of the minimal requirements for this assignment. You should include any and all supplemental

information that is relevant to the presentation of your project. If relevant, include a brief literature review with citations in correct APA format.
Any work included in this project that was completed for a previous assignment (either for this course or for RC704, RC705, or RC714) should be revised to incorporate instructor feedback.
You may begin work on this project any time after September 2006, and must turn it in by the assigned due date, as it will not be accepted at a later date! If your project remains incomplete by the week before the due date, use your remaining time to prepare a detailed summary and self-assessment, rather than trying to complete the project as you originally designed it.
General guidelines
There is no specific page limit, and no minimum page requirement. The final project should be presented in a 3-ring binder of whatever size best fits your materials. Each page should be typed in 12-point type (Times New Roman or Ariel) and use a one-inch margin on the right, and up to a 1 ½ inch margin on the left, to allow for punching holes. You may use whatever spacing works (single or double), and include whatever worksheet(s) and supplemental materials are relevant.
No person other than you should be identified, and your internship agency should not be named. Follow the HIPAA guidelines for confidentiality (attached). By preparing a confidential and anonymous document, you will be able to use this project as part of your portfolio in future job applications, training you might offer, and/or implementation efforts.
Introduction
Include a title page (formatted as you choose) that identifies you by name. Follow the title page with your description of psychiatric rehabilitation and the agency assessment from the first assignment (Update #1). Be sure that you have revised these, and incorporated any instructor feedback. Finally, provide a one-page description (maximum) of what your project was designed to demonstrate.
The Project
The final project is designed to allow you to demonstrate that you understand psychiatric rehabilitation well enough to implement it in practice. The implementation might be with a single individual who is in need of psychiatric rehabilitation services, or it might involve providing services to a group of individuals. Alternatively, you might implement a staff development project, a program evaluation, or a demonstration of a new service delivery method or model. Because the project occurs within the context of one specific agency, each project will be different.
Ideally, the project will demonstrate understanding of all aspects of psychiatric rehabilitation, as you have learned through all of your specialization courses. In designing the project, you should review materials from previous courses, including details about the psychiatric rehabilitation technology as developed at the BU Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation. carefully to the principles related to psychosocial rehabilitation, consumer involvement, multicultural competency, ethics, language use, and any other areas that have been covered in your coursework.
Consider challenges to implementation at the individual, program, and system levels. Discuss barriers that you encountered with your specific project, but also explore how your experience might generalize to other situations where you might want to provide services and/or create program change. Recommended: Use information in the recommended text to help structure your description. For example, see Chapter 8 in the Drake et al. (2005) text, as previously mentioned, as well as other chapters on clinical decision making (Chapter 5) and service systems (Chapter 11). The textbook from RC714 (Bellack et al., 2004) also may have useful implementation points on, for example, challenges involved in delivering services to people with certain symptom or behavior problems (e.g., substance abuse), and on creating a supportive environment for facilitating and sustaining behavior change.
Audiotape(s)
You may submit as many audiotapes as you consider relevant to your project. However, you must submit at least one 30-minute audiotape of an interview with an individual who uses the services of your internship agency. The interview must be relevant to your project and must be relevant to the individual’s rehabilitation and recovery. Prepare a description of the individual (maximum=2 pages single spaced), and a description of the purpose of the interview. You may use the individual descriptions developed for one of the two previous assignments. Include one transcription, using the RC 706-RC 707 format (instructions will be provided if requested), with the audiotape set and marked as required (e.g., indicate which side of the tape has the transcribed section). Rate your on-tape responses using the empathy scale; include alternative responses and a brief assessment of your interpersonal skills as evidenced on the audiotape.
Summary
Provide a one-page description (minimum) of what your project did demonstrate, including any surprises and regrets that you experienced. This is your chance to describe what you did, what happened, and what you would do if you had a chance to do it all over again. A strong summary statement will make reference to psychiatric rehabilitation principles, best practices, and any unique circumstances surrounding the project, as well as your individual performance.
Self-assessment
Compare your strengths and weaknesses on completing this project with your global assessment of your strengths and weaknesses that you identified for the first assignment (Update # 1). Additionally, include a brief description of your leadership potential as a psychiatric rehabilitation professional. Describe what you think is most important about what you have learned from all of the psychiatric rehabilitation specialization courses and from your internship experiences. Identify your future learning goals, which, for most students, will be post-graduation goals. Describe your career goals—where you would like to work next (and/or where you will be working next), and what you hope to contribute to the field of psychiatric rehabilitation.
Preparation materials for the CPRP exam (see www.uspra.org) will give you an idea of the general competencies expected of psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners, which might help you structure a comprehensive and detailed self-assessment.
Grading scale
Include a copy of the grading scale (attached) as the last page of your project. A .pdf file is available on the courseinfo site.
CONFIDENTIALITY
HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) includes a privacy rule, stating (Section 164.514a): “Health information that does not identify an individual and with respect to which there is no reasonable basis to believe that the information can be used to identify an individual is not individually identifiable health information,” and therefore does not fall under the strict HIPAA requirements. In keeping with ethical requirements for confidentiality, and the new HIPAA guidelines, assignments will be evaluated to be sure that “the risk is very small that the information could be used, alone or in combination with other reasonably available information, by an anticipated recipient to identify and individual who is a subject of the information” (HIPAA Section 164.514.b.1.i).
Therefore, you must be sure to delete or disguise any of the following identifiers of “the individual or of relatives, employers, or household members of the individual” (HIPAA Section 164.514.b.2.i)” as well as information in an individual description that could identify your internship agency or other service providers:
1. Names
2. All geographic subdivisions smaller than State
3. All elements of dates (except year) for dates directly related to an individual, including birth date, admission date, discharge date, date of death…
In addition, HIPAA prohibits disclosure of identifying information such as telephone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, health plan beneficiary numbers, account numbers (e.g., for billing purposes), certificate/license numbers, vehicle identifiers and serial numbers including license plate numbers, device identifiers and serial numbers, web addresses (URLs), Internet protocol addresses (IP), “biometric identifiers” including finger and voice prints, full face photos and comparable images, and any unique identifying number, characteristic, or code.
Of these items, the “unique identifying characteristic” also should be carefully considered when determining which information to delete or disguise.
